NPLD Conference and General Assembly in Santiago de Compostela

The Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity, in collaboration with the Government of
Galicia, is hosted the conference “The Impact of Language Technologies on the Economy
and Society” alongside the annual General Assembly of the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity, in Santiago de Compostela on the 25th and 26th of April 2023.

On the 25th of April, the General Assembly took place where there was a unanimous decision to approve the membership of the Macedonian Association SONCE to join the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity. We are delighted to welcome our newest member to the Network to Promote the Linguistic Diversity and we are looking forward to work with them in the future.

The 26th of April began with the welcoming words of Bartomeu Riera Tarongí the president of Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity, Valentín García Gómez of the Government of Galicia, Anna Solé of the European Commission. This was followed by the keynote speech of Senén Barro Ameneiro and Elisa Fernández Rei from the University of Santiago de Compostela discussing their research project; ‘Nós: a language technology project for Galician, focusing on society and economy’.

After the keynote speech participants of the conference were able to enjoy listening to the good practices of the Basque, Catalan and Welsh experiences of the use and impact of language technologies. Following this interesting and insightful discussion, a roundtable discussion took place that provided a European perspective on the importance of language technologies for regional or minority languages. The participants of the conference were able to listen to the perspectives of Vicent Climent-Ferrando from University Pompeu Fabra, Fernando Ramallo from University of Vigo and Cor van der Meer from Mercator Fryske Academy.

The conference ended with the closing remarks of Gregorio Ferreiro Fente from the Government of Galicia, summarising the discussions of the day and the importance of promoting regional and minority languages. We would like to thank the Government of Galicia for their generosity for hosting the General Assembly and conference and to thank all participants for attending.
