NPLD adopts new Position Paper setting strategic priorities

The General Assembly of the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD), held in Pamplona/Iruña in May 2025, has officially adopted the new NPLD Position Paper. The document outlines the network’s shared strategic vision and policy priorities for the coming years, reaffirming its commitment to protecting and promoting Europe’s rich linguistic diversity.

The NPLD is a European-wide platform bringing together 41 member organisations from 13 countries, including regional governments, universities, and NGOs. The network represents 21 regional and minority languages, working collectively to ensure their recognition, protection, and integration into public life.

The newly adopted Position Paper presents concrete policy recommendations for European, national, and regional authorities. It covers key areas such as:

  • Legal recognition and protection of regional and minority languages

  • Inclusive multilingual education from early childhood to higher education

  • Ensuring minority language access to EU programmes and funding

  • Digital inclusion and support for AI technologies in all European languages

  • Revitalisation of endangered languages and support for community-led initiatives

  • Integration of linguistic diversity in migration and employment policies

The document also calls for the reinstatement of an EU Commissioner for Multilingualism and for stronger enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

With this Position Paper, the NPLD urges European institutions to place linguistic diversity at the heart of policy-making, and renews its own commitment to advocating for inclusive, future-oriented language policies across the continent.
