Fryske Akademy – Mercator European Research Centre
 
The research institute Fryske Akademy studies the (West-) Frisian language, the multilingual society in the province of Fryslân (the Netherlands), the Frisian culture and identity, and its regional history in an international perspective.  
The Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning is part of the Fryske Akademy. Mercator, funded by the provincial government, focuses on research in multilingualism, multilingual education and policy, specifically with regards to European regions with lesser-used languages. Other elements of Mercator are a series of Regional Dossiers describing the position of lesser-used languages in education, and a series of Wiki’s on Minority Language Learning, i.e. factsheets that give brief overviews of languages with a very modest or no place in the education system.
 
Fryske Akademy – Mercator European Research Centre have a seat in the NPLD Steering Committee.

STATUS OF THE LANGUAGE

Official second language of Province of Fryslân; recognition as Minority Language in the European Charter for Regional or Minoriy Languages. Frisian language and culture is a track (60 ECTS) in the BA Minorities and Multilingualism (University of Groningen). It is also possible to follow some of these courses as a Minor. The University of Amsterdam also offers courses on Frisian.
