Founded in 1884, Bangor University is a research-led institution located in the heart of one of the most vibrant Welsh-speaking communities in Wales. The university has around 10,000 students studying across three colleges and eleven academic schools.

The Welsh language forms a core part of the University’s identity and is one of three strategic pillars that underpins its strategic vision. This vision aims to build on Bangor University’s position as a sector-leader for Welsh language academic provision and a world-leading proponent of bilingualism.

In its teaching, the university has developed Welsh medium provision across all academic areas.

In its research, the university has fostered renowned expertise in the areas of language policy and planning, bilingual education, and language behaviour change.

As a workplace, the university’s deeply embedded bilingualism is grounded in a comprehensive language policy and wide-ranging support infrastructure.

Public administration (although only 2 councils have Welsh as their official working langauges) must offer a biling service, media (S4C, Radio Cymru, no daily newspaper but community papers and magazines and an online service), education (22.47% currently in Welsh Medium or bilingual education), leisure – project but no real national policy.
